Scrapie eradication

Scrapie is a degenerative and eventually fatal disease affecting the central nervous systems of sheep and goats. Animals may appear uncoordinated and weak, become thin, be highly sensitive to noise and sudden movements, have tremors, press their heads against solid objects, star-gaze and repeatedly rub, leading to bare spots – therefore the disease commonly became known as “scrapie.”

To be declared “scrapie-free,” the United States must remain scrapie-free for seven years. That milestone could be reached by 2028 if no further cases are identified. It’s time to finish the fight! Animal Identification is the primary element of any livestock traceability system. To request official sheep and goat tags, a flock or premises ID, or both, call 1-866-USDA-Tag (866-873-2824).
